Electrical Properties of Skin: Comparison of Rat, Rabbit, Nude Mouse and Hairless Mouse Skin
Oh Seaung-Youl

Abstract
We have measured the electrical impedance of skin as a function of frequency. Bode plot was constructed and it show d a typical shape for parallel RC circuit. Resistance and capacitance of skin were determined from the intercept and slope of the 1/Z(impedance)2 vsf(frequency)2 plot. The system was validated using a model RC circuit, constructed using a resistor and a capacitor of known value. The initial resistance of rabbit skin immediately after soaking in 0.1 M NaCl solution was about 3.8 KomegaMcm2 and it decreased with time. On the other hand capacitance increased with time. The resistance of rat skin was larger than rabbit skin (4.1 Komegacm2 Nude mouse and hairless mouse skin showed larger resistance. These results agree well with the literature that current pathway through skin is the appendaeges, such as the hair follicles. Overall, these results provide some mechanistic insight into ion conduction through the skin and into the role of stratum corneum lipids in skin capacitance.
